Job Description

Starbucks was founded in 1971 in Seattle, USA. Nowadays, Starbucks has more than 17.000 stores in 57 countries. Since 2002 the EMEA regional support center is located in Amsterdam (Westelijk Havengebied), where in 2003 we opened our EMEA coffee roasting plant.
Within Starbucks EMEA approximately 200 people are working in marketing, operations, the plant, supply chain and staff divisions like IT, finance and HR.

The Senior Business Ethics and Compliance Manager contributes to Starbucks’ success by developing and implementing programs to ensure compliance with legal requirements and Starbucks Standards of Business Conduct. Consults with and advises senior leaders to influence strategic direction and support ethical leadership, promotes ethical behavior, facilitates proper decision-making, and provides Starbucks partners with the tools and resources to do what is right in any context. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

 

Summary of Key Responsibilities

As Senior Business Ethics and Compliance Manager you consult with and advise senior leaders to influence strategic direction and support ethical leadership. You promote ethical behavior, facilitate proper decision-making, and provide Starbucks partners with the tools and resources to do what is right in any context. You model and act in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

 

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leadership – Setting goals/priorities for the EMEA Region, Support Centre(s) and local business units, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together at Starbucks:
  • Consult with and advise local leadership regarding legal compliance, legal risk management, and ethical leadership;
  • Identify and communicate key responsibilities and practices to ensure executive sponsorship and cross-functional alignment to achieve business results;
  • Develop consulting relationships with joint ventures and licensed partner leadership teams to influence ethical business practices and legal compliance in business partner operations;
  • Lead the strategic direction and implementation of Starbucks ethics and compliance programs to ensure the success of the Company.
  • Planning and Execution – Developing strategic and operational plans, managing execution, and measuring results:
  • Develop strategic focus and operating plans against priorities for international compliance programs;
  • Plan and manage business unit/department processes and practice to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives;
  • Prepare, communicate and educate senior leadership and functional client groups on changes in policies and practices within the organization;
  • Support due diligence initiatives with joint ventures and licensed partners and development of compliance initiatives in joint ventures and licensed partner businesses.
  • Business Requirements – Providing functional expertise, strategically embedding content and executing functional responsibilities:
  • Communicate the ethics and compliance program to all partners. Prepare and deliver presentations to executives, managers and other partners about the ethics and compliance program;
  • Advise and collaborate with partners to develop and deliver ethics/compliance-related communications for partners in regional offices and throughout Retail. Meet with partners at all levels departments to build relationships and enhance their abilities to support Starbucks ethics and compliance program;
  • Coordinate with senior leaders, attorneys, business unit leaders and functional teams to help manage ethics and/or compliance issues in areas such as import/export controls, licensing and permitting practices, antitrust, privacy, conflict of interest, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the UK Bribery Act, local anti-bribery laws and insider trading;
  • Provide counsel and advice to partners at all levels regarding Starbucks Standards of Business Conduct in areas such as gifts, meals and entertainment;
  • Develop and implement ethics and compliance trainings;
  • Develop and implement international ethics and compliance initiatives to support Company growth, new business channels and emerging businesses;
  • Develop and monitor the compliance Business Conduct Helpline program, through which partners can ask questions or raise questions regarding Starbucks Standards of Business Conduct;
  • Oversee the development of reports and statistical analyses to track Business Conduct Helpline call activity and assess program performance;
  • Oversee the development and distribution of Standards of Business Conduct for international partners;
  • Implement and operate Starbucks Anti-Bribery Program and Starbucks Legal Risk Program within markets and regions;
  • Ensure thorough, timely and effective investigations of matters raised through the program. Implement programs and response to matters and conditions brought to the Business Conduct Helpline;
  • Monitor industry and regulatory developments and make compliance recommendations to senior leadership, including the chief ethics and compliance officer;
  • Pursue continuing education to maintain knowledge of current ethics and compliance rules and practices;
  • Support controls and ethical business practices involving permitting and licensing, as well as importing and exporting commodities and/or products throughout Starbucks markets, regions and origin countries.
  • Partner Development & Team Building – Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
  • Challenge and inspire partners to achieve business results;
  • Conduct and ensure the completion of performance reviews;
  • Ensure partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements;
  • Oversee training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions;
  • Provide coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results.

 

The qualified Senior Business Ethics and Compliance Manager we’re looking for has a minimum of 5 years of in-house Business Ethics, Corporate Compliance and/or Legal experience, preferably within an international company.

You have significant experience in managing and/or consulting regarding anti-bribery/anti-corruption laws and significant experience in designing, building and operating formal in-house ethics and compliance programs.


Must haves

  • Bachelor or Master degree;
  • Ability to consult with and influence senior leadership;
  • Ability to develop and communicate vision and strategy for Regional BEC function at all levels;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to conduct independent research and analysis;
  • Ability to make effective presentations;
  • Ability to prepare written communications for internal audiences;
  • Ability to understand legal material and recognize critical issues;
  • Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities;
  • Ability to lead and/or manage confidential, sensitive corporate investigations;
  • Significant experience in managing and/or consulting regarding anti-bribery / anti-corruption laws;
  • Significant experience designing, building and operating formal in-house ethics and compliance programs.
