Job Description
The United Nations Global Compact seeks to develop a resource that inspires action in support of food security and sustainable agriculture. The resource (i. e. publication) will be aimed at profiling leading-edge practices implemented by companies individually or in collaboration with key actors. The most innovative corporate practices in a select number of areas and the most promising types of collaboration will be featured as the core of the resource. In addition, the resource will include recommendations to public policy makers on how to improve enabling spaces for these types of businesses and investments to enhance their contributions to food security and sustainable agriculture.
Objectives of the resource (or deliverable) include the following:
- To assist participating companies in the UN Global Compact in better understanding the opportunities in these domains;
- To inspire greater business action contributing to food security and sustainable agriculture;
- To encourage meaningful partnerships in support of food security and sustainable agriculture;
- To encourage Governments and public policy makers to create more incentives and enabling spaces to encourage such development.
The key milestone in this project will be to launch this deliverable at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development – Rio+20 (June 2012).
III. Duties, responsibilities and output expectations
Under supervision of the UN Global Compact, the Consultant will manage all aspects of the development of the deliverable including the following:
- Refine the overall workplan and timeline in relation to developing the envisioned deliverable;
- Identify relevant companies and other actors whose input will inform the content of the deliverable;
- Find best practices examples to be profiled in the deliverable;
- Convene, design and facilitate webinars and interviews with companies and other actors as appropriate;
- Collect and incorporate relevant content from key sources (e.g. selected companies, UN agencies, Global Compact and others) in formulating the deliverable;
- Conduct desk and empirical research as needed;
- Draft the final deliverable;
- Assist in the organization of the relevant event, to be held along the sidelines of the Rio+20 conference, where the deliverable will be launched.
The Consultant and his or her affiliated organization, if any, will be recognized in the final deliverable.
IV. Competencies & Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in areas relevant to the position including, but not limited to: research and writing, project management, food security and sustainable agriculture, corporate sustainability/responsibility;
- Expertise on or experience in relation to food security and agriculture and knowledge of key issues/ actors in the space;
- Project management skills and strong ability to coordinate, track and facilitate complex projects in limited period of time and meet strict deadlines;
- Excellent inter-personal communication skills for networking, building relationships, and liaising with various stakeholders, including companies, investors, civil society and UN agencies;
- Strong writing and speaking skills;
- Excellent communications and drafting capabilities in English.
- Must be eligible to work in the US.
V. Remuneration
Remuneration will be approximately US $30,000 for the 4 month period, plus the cost of travel to Rio, which will be covered.
