Job Description
Background SEE (Social Environmental Economic) Innovation is a national program with the mission to build awareness, capacity, and structures for social and environmental transformation. SEE Innovation has three active programs for which we seek a social media/communications intern. Green Press Initiative (GPI) is working to improve the ecological and social impacts of paper production and consumption. The program’s core objective is to catalyze transformations within the U.S. book and newspaper industries. SEE Innovation is undertaking a new project called, Project for Improved Environmental Coverage (PIEC), with the goal of encouraging better and more environmental news coverage in all types of media outlets. Dream of a Nation is a national public education and engagement effort that supports critical environmental and social innovations using a multi-media approach.
Current program staff are located in Asheville, NC, Charlotte, NC, Silver Spring, MD, New York, NY and Burlington, VT. Location for the position is flexible.
Position Overview See Innovation is seeking an individual with training or experience in Marketing, Communications, and New Media in an undergraduate or graduate Communications or Public Relations program who will work/provide support in the following areas:
GPI: Help to improve current social media platforms and increase visibility and following. Research and implement new and alternate forms of media and communications opportunities. Help with traditional media outreach.
PIEC: Set up social media platforms e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc, improve website with timely/current resources, help broaden stakeholder engagement through various media.
Dream of a Nation: Help to improve current social media platforms and increase visibility and following, set-up “action” opportunities for each issue, keep new updates on issues coming, start discussion blogs.
Qualifications: • Experience using social networking sites and web2.0 applications including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, wikis and RSS • Proficient in a wide range of computer programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint • Excellent written and verbal communication • Ability to work independently and meet objectives • Experience with website development and knowledge of html, CSS and FrontPage is a plus
Dates and Location: Semester internship, with potential for a part-time paid position, location flexible (telecommute position)
Compensation: A stipend is available. The intern will also be reimbursed for telephone expenses and any expenses incurred to complete project per supervisor approval in advance. For-credit exchange can be arranged with individual’s programs
Expectations: The Communications Intern will be expected to contribute 10-15 hours per week and commit to the project for at least 4-6 months, or semester’s end if needed
