Job Description
The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is a unique alliance of companies, trade unions and voluntary organisations working together to improve the lives of workers producing consumer goods – from tea to T-shirts, from flowers to footballs from around the world. We are a not-for-profit organisation limited by guarantee.
After 12 years in the role, the current Chair has decided to step down at the end of May 2012 and ETI is therefore seeking a new Chair to take the organisation forward in what is clearly a challenging time for the global economy.
ETI has set out an exciting and demanding new direction for change creating an opportunity for the new Chair to be a leading figure in ethical trade and the broader world of corporate social responsibility. Applicants will be required to lead the ETI’s tripartite Board in ensuring that ETI has clear strategic direction and that the Board fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation in accordance with its constitution and legal requirements. S/he will act as the figurehead for the organisation as we embark on an ambitious agenda to create innovative practical solutions, support our members in their ethical trade efforts, influence policy and demonstrate that corporate partnerships can drive transformative change for workers in global supply chains.
The Chair works in partnership with the Executive Director to help him/her ensure the organisation is able to achieve the objectives established and is financially viable. The Chair will also need to provide leadership in external relations with members, donors and other key external stakeholders.
We are looking for someone who has the stature to command the confidence of the Board, governments and senior people in ETI’s membership organisations.
You should have experience as a Chair or Board Member of an influential organisation with global reach. You must be credible and passionate in the field of human rights and in particular labour rights with a reputation for integrity and independence; and most importantly you must have an understanding and experience of issues relevant to ethical trade.
